Hirschman and Hanbury Big Winners In Chemung’s 2-Day ’08
Finale - By Carol Houssock
(Chemung, NY) The 2008 season is now history, but a little more track history was made this past weekend. In what became a 2-day finale, the curtain came down when the checkered flag fell ending the track’s second-ever NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event. Winners included Matt Hirschman (Tour), Tony Hanbury (Nascar Weekly
Modifieds), Daren Scherer (INEX Legends), Don Adams
(ATQMRA), Chris Daugherty (Super Stocks), Phil Haner (4 Cylinders), and AJ Hamilton
(Bandoleros). The only remaining item of business is the 2008 banquet, to be held at a later date.
When Matt Hirschman pulled into victory lane following the 122-lap NASCAR Whelen Modified race his crew greeted him with a broom. He had, in fact, pulled off the ultimate sweep. The 26 year-old from Northampton, PA unloaded the fastest car off the truck, had the fastest speed in practice as well as the 2-lap time trials, then he won his heat and the race. He had done it all, and closed the gap between himself and Ted Christopher with 2 races remaining on the Tour schedule.
While Hirschman led every lap, there was plenty of passing going on as others worked their way toward the front. Eleven caution periods for 48 laps slowed the race, but no one was slowing down heat winner Chuck Hossfeld and former Tour champions Todd Szegedy and Mike

Flemke, Jr. The pair bounced off each other on several occasions, with Christopher having to restart at the rear and work his way back up through the field only to be involved in a second altercation with
Flemke.
Eric Beers had his fine run taken away when Ronnie Silk tagged him in turn 3 while trying to take the inside line. That one, late in the race, set up one attempt at a green/white/checker finish that also was cut short. The race, then 122 laps in distance, ended under yellow with Hirschman crossing the stripe ahead of Szegedy and
Stefanik.
“I love New York,” he said from victory lane. Hirschman was referring to his Whelen Modified Tour win in July at Spencer Speedway, Chemung’s sister track. “I knew we had a fast car and this team really came together to give me what I needed to win here today,” he said after finally finding victory lane at Chemung despite several previous attempts in other non-Tour events.
Tony Hanbury put an exclamation point on his fabulous 2008 season by winning again, this time in his father’s car. Heat winners Josh Philpott and Lee Sharpsteen were the first to draw for starting positions, but Hanbury drew #1, started from the pole and led all 30 laps. The race was slowed for 3
