Jimmy Zacharias Dominant in 3rd Consecutive Chemung Sunoco Modified Win
by Carol Houssock

Saturday night’s program at Chemung Speedrome rolled off rather quickly thanks to very few caution flags in qualifying and feature events for the five regular divisions. Winners on a hot and buggy night included Jimmy Zacharias (Sunoco Modifieds), Mike Nichols (Super Stocks), Monica Green (4 Cylinders), Pat Judson (INEX Legends), and Garrett Zacharias (Bowen Racecars Bandoleros). All of them thanked their own fathers and wished a Happy Father’s Day to all of the fathers in attendance.

A week ago Jimmy Zacharias said his #71 Sunoco Modified was at about 80% and he told everyone to watch out when it’s operating at 100%. While no one knows the actual percentage, Zacharias could sing along with the classic Alabama song ‘close enough to perfect for me’ after picking up his third win in three weeks.

Charlie Sharpsteen and Tony Hanbury won the two heat races and a six-car invert placed them in row three for the 40-lap feature. Paul Johnson and Connor Sellars started from the front row, just ahead of Jesse Kent and Zacharias. Sellars powered around Johnson and led the first two laps. Zacharias got around Sellars and took over on the third lap.

As the field worked lap eight track officials put out the caution flag when a piece of blacktop had broken free and was in the racing groove near the flagger’s stand. A lap later, when Jody Buckley spun in turn two Gary Coon came along and tagged him and forced his early retirement. Those were the only cautions in the race, which then became a four-car breakaway by Zacharias, Hanbury, Sellars and Jesse Kent.

At the halfway point Zacharias was lapping slower cars and building on his race lead. Gary Noe and Zack Knowlden were also running together in fifth and sixth. Over the final ten laps Zacharias continued his domination on this night and the gap separating him from Hanbury widened. Zacharias went on to score his third win in as many weeks, this time over Hanbury, Sellars, Kent and Noe. Zacharias thanked his crew for their hard work, particularly over the past week, in giving him the car he ran with and won. He also vowed to continue to improve the car.

When Super Stock driver Mike Nichols pulled in Saturday night he did so trailing Jim Lamoreaux by just one point. He was also celebrating his birthday. A few hours later he celebrated his second feature win of the year and the division point lead. John Lane and Nick Robinson got things going by winning their heat races, but a six-car invert placed Nichols on the outside of the front row alongside Tim Gullo. When it was over they were the only race leaders, Gullo for the first eight laps and Nichols for the final 17. The race went 13 laps before the first caution when Derrick Tarbox spun in turn one. A lap later Lamoreaux was deemed at fault for contact with RJ Zacharias and both restarted at the rear. The next 11 laps were all green and all Nichols, as he stayed in front of Gullo. Behind them Nick Robinson and Frank Chapman ran a great race for third. With five laps to go Chapman had overtaken Robinson for third and John Lane was ahead of Terry Potrzebowski. When the double checkered flag waved, they were over the #72 of former track champion Nichols. He finished this one ahead of Gullo, Chapman, Robinson and Lane.

Two-time, and defending, 4 Cylinder champion Monica Green had said she would continue racing this year providing she had fun. She had fun Saturday night and parked her car in victory lane for the first time this year. Ben Perry led early but was passed by Kevin May. The first caution came when Paul Platt’s fuel cell was dragging and officials quickly told him to stop. The track crew did a great job in preventing what could have been a dangerous situation. The restart had May and Zack Bennett on the front row and Bennett took over. Caution came out again when Jacob Gustafson and Tyler Harbst got together. Over the next three laps Green got around Greg Moldt, May and then took the lead from Bennett. Green got a nice boost from teammate Triston Kline on two restarts and maintained the lead over Bennett in a classic FWD/RWD duel. Green scored the win and shared victory lane with Bennett. Kline finished third, ahead of May and Harbst. The crowd cheered when Bennett hugged Green and they shared victory lane for a few moments. Both acknowledged a great race and thanked their respective sponsors. Kline and Bennett won their heats.

Pat Judson and Kevin Youngs have taken home all of the hardware and victory lane memories so far this season in INEX Legends competition. They, along with Kyle Youngs, won the three heats and set the stage for their 20-lap feature. Teddy Bowen capitalized on his pole position starting spot and led the way early over Chuck Lohmeyer and then Judson. When caution came out with seven laps complete it set up a Bowen/Judson front row. Judson prevailed with a nice outside pass of Bowen. Meanwhile, Kevin Youngs was charging toward the front and had second at the halfway point. Bowen spun and Gary Ham did as well, with nowhere to go, with four laps remaining. Judson and Youngs made up row one for the restart and had a great drag race into turn one. Judson stayed out front but the third, and final, caution came out with two laps remaining. The classis green/white/checkered ended this one with Judson scoring his second win of the year, over point leader Kevin Youngs, Keith Youngs, newcomer Noah Korner and Alex Bowen.

The 10-lap Bowen Racecars feature went caution-free. The invert placed Josh Duke and Griffin Montfort-Balfour on the front row but it was Seth Zacharias who made a nice move to take the early lead. Garrett Zacharias made an equally nice move and dove to the inside of his cousin’s car and took over on the third lap. From then on Garrett pulled away and built up a nice lead. The best battle in this one involved the Rygielski brothers, each of whom led the other. This one went to Garrett Zacharias (Outlaw), who finished ahead of Seth Zacharias (Bandit winner), Evan Rygielski, Brian Rygielski and Dominick Wood. The Zacharias cousins in victory lane represented the 2017 version of ‘Smokey and the Bandit, something they had hoped would occur. Both thanked their fathers for their help over the years. G. Zacharias and B. Rygielski won the two heat races.
