Chemung Speedrome Returning as Saturday Night Hot Spot
by Carol Houssock

Beginning in the 2017 season, Chemung Speedrome will return to Saturday night racing. For the past several years Chemung operated on Friday nights, in direct competition with its sister track, Spencer Speedway in Williamson, NY. Chemung also plans some Sunday shows in 2017 but this early notice of the switch back to Saturday is being sent out to benefit the race teams, fans, and employees alike.
“It's never an easy decision to uproot staff and competitors and move a venue to a new day, but several race teams have been asking us to do this for a while,” said track owner John White. As the owner of both Chemung and Spencer, White has heard from competitors wishing to run for points at both tracks. Both facilities are NASCAR home tracks, offering competitors the opportunity to run for New York State and national points. Some of the Chemung regulars have gone to Spencer and vice versa, especially when one track competed on Sunday afternoon.
“After considering many options, we feel that for the future of the track and asphalt racing in this area, Saturday night racing under the lights will grow into something special and make Chemung the premier short track it has the potential to be,” White added.
White is currently in discussion with INEX for a sanction to add the Legends, as possibly the Bandoleros, to the program at Spencer Speedway. “We’ve had good luck with them at Chemung and are hopeful to run them at Spencer as well,” White stated. Driver safety for the Bandoleros has been a concern at Chemung, and that will be regulated beginning in 2017. “We’re adding a mandatory restrictor plate and gear rule for the Bandoleros at Chemung next year,” he added.
Change is never easy, and Chemung’s management team thanks everyone for their support of the Speedrome on Friday nights. “We appreciate everyone’s support and we now hope that this early notice will allow teams and fans to make the switch to Saturday nights an easy one.” Early reaction to the change has been positive.
