Sunny Practice, But Rainy Race Day, for Chemung Speedrome;
Opener Now May 15th
by Carol Houssock
The sun shone brightly Saturday afternoon for a three hour
open practice session at Chemung Speedrome. However, a rainy
and cool forecast for Sunday forced a delay of the season
opener and a schedule adjustment. While no longer the first
event of the year, the Ferris Mowers Race of Champions 75
lap event, along with the New York Super Stocks, will join
the INEX Legends and Bandoleros on Friday, May 27th to run
what had been planned for May 1st.
The schedule change will now highlight the track’s five regular divisions
when racing returns for season 16 at the Speedrome. Opening
day will now be Sunday, May 15th beginning at 2:15 PM.
The headline Sunoco Modified division promises to be a mix of veterans,
rookies and drivers returning to racing action. TJ Zacharias
was the only feature winner from last year who came out for
practice. Second in points in 2015, he picked up three wins
in his strongest season to date at the Speedrome. Nick
Morich, Zach Curren, Larry Jaynes, Tyler Rypkema, Zach
Truesdail, Paul Johnson and rookie Zach Knowlden all turned
several laps in practice. While not in attendance, drivers
Patti Pruitt and TJ Potrzebowski also plan to run at the
Speedrome this year.
By far the track’s INEX Legends division was best represented at the
Saturday practice, with 20 teams on hand. Two-time and
defending champ, Alexandria Smith, appears determined to go
for number three. Competition will be tough, including three
Young brothers, the Lohmeyers, Pat Judson and Matt Evans.
INEX Bandoleros continue to provide our next generation of racers, and
nine of them were turning laps on Saturday afternoon. Teddy
Bowen, the 2015 champion, was there along with Garrett
Zacharias, Dominick Wood and several newcomers.
Gates open at noon on Sunday, May 15th, with practice for all divisions
kicking off at 1 PM. The first heat race will begin at 2:15
PM. Admission is $13 for adults, $11 for those ages 65 and
older, $5 for kids ages 6-12, and free to children 5 and
under. Friday night action kicks off on May 20th.
