Chemung Mods to Tony Hanbury and Jimmy Zacharias; Brittney Jack picks up Bounty in Super Stocks
By: John Flock

Chemung Speedrome delivered an entertaining program Friday evening. Visiting SUNOCO Modifieds from Spencer Speedway, Rusty Smith and rookie 14-year-old Tim Lewis were welcome additions to the field. Our Sister track, Spencer Speedway, had to cancel their program due to wet grounds.

The SUNOCO Modifieds ran two features this evening. The first event was a 40 lap affair, with the line-ups set by regular handicapping rules. Tony Hanbury took command after battling T.J. Potrzebowski, J.R. Kent and T.J. Zacharias. Once in front, Hanbury held his lead to the checkers. T.J. Zacharias would be about a straight ahead of T.J. Zacharias at the checkers. A four car battle behind the leaders held the fans’ attention. Rusty Smith, Zach Curren, T.J. Potrzebowski, Jim Zacharias and J.R. Kent had their own battle to the finish.

The second SUNOCO Modified feature, a 35 lap event, was lined up by an inversion draw. Tony Hanbury drew number six, and 6th place finisher Jimmy Zacharias started on the pole. Like a kid with his hand in the cookie jar, Jimmy would not let this opportunity pass him by.

Jimmy Z led early and often, controlling every lap for his victory. Sixth place starter Tony Hanbury would battle through some strong competition to take the runner up position. The next five finishers would be where the action was, as Zach Curren would lead those racers to the checkers. Fifteen cars started each of the features. Rookie racer Tim Lewis would earn a pair of top ten finishes. Heats were won by Jody Buckley and T.J. Zacharias.

After Lee Sharpsteen and Jeff Goodwin won their qualifying event, most fans thought that they would be at the top of the Super Stock feature. Not quite, said the formerly unlucky Brittney Jack. “Lucky” would move to the lead early in the feature. Yes, Sharpsteen and Goodwin put on an amazing duel through the last half of the feature but they were racing for second place. Jeff Goodwin would make a late race charge to pass Lee Sharpsteen. It only lasted for a lap or two before Sharpsteen would take back the second position. Brittney Jack would earn an $800 payday after picking up a bounty that Owner John White had posted for anyone that could beat Jeff Goodwin. Jeff had won every Super Stock race before this weekend at Chemung.

Nick Morich was the only 4-cylinder stock on hand, handing him another check mark in the winner‘s column. Nick also races in the INEX Bandolero division. The Bandolero special saw David French win another feature, with Nick Morich and Lars McElravy in tow. Each Bandolero team got a trophy and a $100 gift certificate that is good for Bandolero parts. Paul Jenkins outdistanced Allison Pierce to the checkers in the dirt track Crate Sportsman race. Casey Pavlick, undefeated this season, was a no-show for the night.

The INEX Legends cars are usually among the quickest racers on the track. Not so tonight. Yellow fever had fans looking for a full moon. Tow trucks and flatbed haulers seem to make more laps than the cars. After all the crashing, a race broke out. Mike Alcaro and Tony Hanbury traded paint and Fiberglas body panels to earn first and second place finishes. Zach Truesdail held second spot until a couple of caution flags flew with two laps to go. Zach felt some contact and fell to third and leading many laps in the main event. Alex Bowen avoided all of the drama to lead fifth place finisher Antony Riforgiato to the checkers.

This coming week, Friday June 21st, the SUNOCO Modifieds are scheduled for a 40 lap feature event. John White is contemplating a change to twin 25 lap events so that the rain outs will not put the racers too far behind in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series battle for the NYS championship. Double points will be awarded for the 4-cylinder Stocks. All other divisions will be on tap for the program.

Chemung Speedrome is located at 605 Wyncoop Creek Rd, Chemung NY 14825. Take exit 59 off Rt. 17 (new I-86). Race day phone is (607) 529 9998, web site www.ChemungSpeedrome.net.
