Jeff Goodwin and Zach Curren Score Big at
By: John Flock
out the month of May, Chemung Speedrome featured the Super
Stock division in a 50 lap challenge event. Many drivers
came in search of the enhanced purse, yet track regular Jeff
Goodwin again claimed the checkers. Some visiting teams
suffered problems before the feature even started. Lee
Sharpsteen appeared to lose an engine in warm ups. Charlie
Sharpsteen couldn’t make the call for the feature. In the
early laps, Both Joe Snell and Jake Snell fell to mechanical
problems. Joining the gang of hard luck, Bob Ripley and
Chuck Nichols would never make it to the half way marker.
Early leaders Gary Noe and Jacob Duke could only hold back
so long before Goodwin would take command. Terry
Potrzebowski fought from the back of the field to chase Jeff
Goodwin’s McDonalds machine to the checkers.
Potrzebowski would Battle with Gary Noe, Joe Lane, and Jason Duke to have
his chance at victory. It was not to be, as Jeff Goodwin
kept his perfect Chemung 2013 winning streak alive. Jeff led
the field by half a lap at the finish. Terry Potrzebowski,
Jason Duke, Joe Lane, and Gary Noe earned top five finishes.
A special incentive from track owner John White will pay any Super Stock
driver that can beat Jeff Goodwin in a feature event. Jeff
must be running on the lead lap (no funny business!) The
incentive is a stout $800 paycheck for that feature winner.
The Sunoco Modifieds put on a great battle in their 40 lap feature event.
On a lap one incident, Jody Buckley and Tony Hanbury tangled
as they exited the second turn. Nearly the full field had to
avoid the accident. With no time to react, Brittney Jack
climbed over the stopped cars. The contact lifted Brittney’s
car into the air, dropping down to the track and rolling
over. The car traveled into turn three. Brittney was checked
out by the ambulance crew. Thankfully, no serious injuries
were reported by the medics. Heat winners Jimmy Zacharias
and T.J. Zacharias were the early favorites. Each had their
problems. While running at the front of the pack, Jimmy’s
machine came to a stop with reported engine woes. While
running in the top five spots T.J. came to a stop on the
back stretch. With very quick pit work by his crew, the
issue was resolved in just a couple of minutes. T.J.
returned to the race one lap down and fought his way forward
for a top ten finish. In the torrid battle in the front of
the pack, T.J. Potrzebowski, J.R. Kent, and Zach Curren
fought hard to control the field. Eventually slipping to the
lead, Zach would command the last half of the race. After
several hits to J.R. Kent’s machine, yellow came out as his
rear bumper was dragging on the track.
J.R. quickly resolved the bumper issue and returned to the back of the
field. Restarting outside the top 10, Kent put on a show for
the fans as he fought forward through the pack. Lap 40 came
abit too early for the flying J.R. Kent as he had to settle
for third. Zach Curren was quite happy in Chemung’s victory
lane as he picked up his first Sunoco Modified victory of
Support divisions add much excitement to the show. The INEX Bandoleros are
a good learning ground for youthful drivers. David French
added another victory to his record, chased by Nick Morich.
Mr. Morich had a great result in the4-cylinder stock
division, earning his second career victory. Howard Bailey
(Towanda PA) made his first appearance in the 4-cylinder
class. Hebrought his stars and stripes and blue car, replete
with U.S. flags. The dirt-track Crate Sportsman class is
growing. Four cars showed and put on an entertaining
feature. Perfect this season, Casey Pavlick earned the
victory. James Howard, Paul Jenkins, and Allison Pierce
chased Pavlick to the finish. New comer James Howard led the
first 9 laps until Pavlick powered to the lead.
INEX Legends race in a tight pack, challenging each other every lap.
Multiple feature Mike Alcaro would fight his way to the
front, taking the point from Austin Berry. Starting tail-end
Charlie, Brandon DeBrakeleer would pass Austin Berry to earn
second spot when the checkers flew. Tony Hanbury and Chuck
Lohmeyer world earn top five finishes. Alex Bowen would back
his car into the foam blocks in turn one in his heat race,
ending the quick racer’s night early.
Chemung Speedrome kicks off the month of June with a full

(40 laps), Super Stocks (25), 4 Cylinders (20), INEX Legends
(Twin 15's), Bandoleros(8), and the Dirt Track Crate

along 4 bicycles, two for boys and two for girls, and more
bicycle helmets for the kids.
For kids of all ages, a hot dog special is planned. The concession
manager, a fan of modified pilot Zach Curren (#94), will
celebrate Zach’s win in the Sunoco Modifieds by offering hot
dogs for 94 cents!
