Chemung Speedrome Readying For 2013 Season
by John Flock
.
Chemung
Speedrome and it's sister track, Spencer Speedway, have both
renewed their sanction agreement with NASCAR. These two
speedways are owned by John White, and both will run their
weekly programs on Friday evenings. These tracks are two
hours apart, so little conflict is expected. Spencer
Speedway is just east of Rochester, near Lake Ontario.
Chemung Speedrome, just off I-86 (US 17), is within sight of
the NY/PA border.
Chemung’s season monster opening event presents the Race of Champions
Asphalt Modified tour. The Sunday, May 5th afternoon race
will cover a distance of 75 laps. Andy Harpell will lead the
RoC Modifieds to their annual visit to Chemung. Joining the
fun will be the popular Super Stocks, INEX Legends, and the
4-Cylinder racers.
The pre-season test and tune session is scheduled for Saturday afternoon,
May 4th. Admission to the grandstands is free for this test
and tune program. This is an open test session for all
divisions. Several RoC Modified teams are expected to dial
in their Modifieds for the RoC race the next day. Admission
to the grandstands is free for this test and tune program.
Chemung’s weekly Friday programs kick off on May 10th. The headline
division is the Sunoco Modifieds, led by defending champion
TJ Zacharias of Candor, NY. Super stock champion Cricket
Clonch is expected to defend his 2012 championship. The
newly defined 4-cylinder division should bring a new field
of drivers to Chemung. INEX Legends track and national
champion Matt Pappa has moved on to the Brett Hearn driver
development program. Other top Legend racers Brandon
DeBrakeleer, Jimmy Zacharias, nationally ranked Raven
Schrantz and Brandon Michael should return to battle for the
track title. The youth INEX Bandoleros division champion,
Nick Morich, narrowly beat out top feature winner David
French by a slim margin. It is unknown at this point if
these two speedsters will return to the Bandoleros or
perhaps move up to the Legends cars.
Popular with fans last season were the dirt-track Crate Sportsman
Modifieds. Champion Casey Pavlick, Dale Welty, Chris
Brockway, Allison Pierce, AJ Potrzebowski, and Loren Lincoln
all raced last season. More drivers are expected to join the
fun on the asphalt at Chemung. Growth is expected in the
4-Cylinder division as they undergo rule changes to revive
the economy aspects of the entry division.
