Chemung Speedrome 2011 PR

August 6th, 2011
Kent, Goodwin, Scherer, Ameigh, and McCray Take Chemung Speedrome Victories - By: Daryl Canfield

The Chemung Speedrome was back in action Friday August 5th with five divisions of racing ready to do battle. The ‘Drome was pleased to have the Great American Circle Track Tour on hand to witness all of the nights racing action. The Circle Track Tour is visiting tracks all around our great nation, look for them at many other local tracks in the near future.

The Bandoleros started the night off with their feature event. Multi-time feature winner Anthony Reforgiato led most of the way until a late race charge by 11 yr old Wesley McCray took the victory. It was the first time McCray visited the ‘Drome and was his first career Bandolero victory. Reforgiato finished second, with Alexandria Smith, David French, and Nick Morich rounding out the top five.

The INEX Legends were now center stage 18 cars strong ready to do battle. Up and comer Raven Schrantz held the early lead until Van Michael moved to the top spot on lap 3. Mike Alcaro was making a quick run to the front, and took the lead on lap 6, but would have to go pitside at a lap 8 caution with a loose rear bumper to make repairs. On the restart, Daren Scherer claimed the top spot with Rich Vanderpool and Bethany Scherer battling for second. Alcaro was charging hard back to the front of the field and moved into the runner-up spot. On the final lap, Alcaro and Daren Scherer made contact through turn 2 and onto the backstretch, Alcaro spun and collected the inside wall and both cars would no longer continue. Bethany Scherer took a little good fortune and a super fast racecar into victory lane for her fist career INEX Legends victory, followed by Andrew Stotler, Rich Vanderpool, Cody Frantz, and Raven Schrantz.

The Super Stocks began their 20 lap feature event with Brittany Jack taking the early lead. Jeff Goodwin was running a close second and putting pressure on Jack for the lead. Jack slid a bit high off turn 2 and Goodwin made the pass for the lead. Jack settled into second with John Lane and Mike Nichols on the charge. Nichols took third from Lane and chased Jack for the runner-up spot. Nichols then made the move into second, but Goodwin was checked out and claimed the win. John Lane claimed third, outside visitor Chip Wanamaker was fourth, and Dave Bennett fifth. Jack was disqualified for an after race altercation and failing to go directly to tech instead of her pit area.

The excitement continued as the 4 cylinder stocks took to the ‘Drome surface. Nick Haner and Gene Purvis led the field to green and the early race action was wild. Brandon Ameigh and Tony Gullo quickly shot toward the front while Purvis held the early lead. Ameigh made the move around Purvis for the lead on lap 6, and Gullo was still reeling in the leaders. Purvis and Gullo split the Jimmy Haner machine coming off turn 2, but Gullo made heavy contact and sent Haner spinning, bringing out a caution. Gullo was put to the rear of the field for the contact. Ameigh went on to win his first 4 Cylinder feature of 2011, Purvis held on for second, Gullo charged back to third, with Archie Haner fourth, and Phil Haner rounding out the top 5.

The Sunoco Modifieds finished up the nights racing action with a 40 lap feature event. Zack Curren and Jody Buckley paced the field to the drop of the green flag. JR Kent quickly made his presence known from his fourth starting position and took the lead on lap 3. Jimmy Zacharias followed Kent to the front and hounded him lap after lap. Kent was up to the challenge and held on for his second straight Sunoco Modified win. Kent was followed by Zacharias, a great run by Zack Curren for third, Buckley fourth, and Curtis Cowles fifth.

This Friday August 12th, the Chemung Speedrome plays host to the Race of Champions Modified Tour for the Bud 150. Also on the card with the RoC Modifieds will be the Sunoco Weekly Mods, Super Stocks, 4 Cylinders, and INEX Legends. Pit gates will open at 3:00pm with grandstand gates opening at 4:30pm. Racing action will get started at 6:15pm. General admission is just $20.00 for adults, $18.00 for seniors, $6.00 for youths 6-14, and kids 5 and under are admitted free.
