Zacharias,
Nichols, Alcaro, Gullo return to Chemung

The Chemung
Speedrome tamed Mother Nature once again and
got in all the racing action on Friday July
8th.
The
Bandoleros were back in action at the ‘Drome
and Anthony Reforgiato once again claimed
the feature win. Up and comer David French
finished second and looks like he will soon
be challenging Reforgiato for the win.
The Inex
Legends were next into action for a 20 lap
feature event. Beth Scherer and Van Michael
would lead the field to green with Michael
taking the early lead. The events first
caution flag would fly on lap 4 as John
Bacon looped the 99 machine in turn 3.
Multi-time feature winner Mike Alcaro
quickly made his way to the lead after the
restart and would go the distance taking the
win. Daren Scherer made a late race charge
to finish second, Van Michael held on for
strong third, with Beth Scherer fourth, and
Jimmy Zacharias fifth.
The first of
two twin 15 features for the Super Stocks
was next out onto the speedway. Brittnay
Jack and John Lane made up the front row,
both looking for their first feature win of
2011. The battle up front early went to a
charging Jeff Goodwin in the 05 machine. As
Goodwin was getting away, Mike Nichols
advanced into second on lap 11 and set sail
for Goodwin. Nichols chased Goodwin down and
on the final lap, gave the old “bump and
run”, nudging Goodwin and making the pass
for the win. Goodwin came across the line
2nd and quickly showed his displeasure with
Nichols. Jeremy Potrzebowski was 3rd,
followed by Terry Potrzebowski and John Lane
rounding out the top 5.
Next to
occupy the asphalt at the ‘Drome was the 4
cylinder mini stocks. A great battle up
front for the lead put the top 4 under a
blanket for several laps. Phil Haner would
lead most of the way until contact on lap 17
with Archie Haner allowed last week’s
winner Tony Gullo to go around the high side
and take the lead. Gullo went on to win his
second straight 4 cylinder feature, Archie
Haner was second, followed by Gene Purvis,
Phil Haner, Pat Judson, and Nick Haner.
The stage
was now set for the 2nd twin 15 for the
Super Stocks. The sparks at the end of the
first twin between Goodwin and Nichols had
everyone wondering what could happen in race
2, but they avoided any further contact.
Terry Potrzebowski held the early lead as
the caution flew on lap 4 for a spin by
Terry Ostrander. As the racing resumed,
Nichols was already to 2nd and applying
heavy pressure to Potrzebowski. Nichols
completed the pass on lap 6 and went on for
back to back Super Stock feature wins. Terry
Potrzebowski held on for second, Jeremy
Potrzebowski third, Goodwin fourth, and John
Lane fifth.
The Sunoco
Modifieds closed out the nights racing
action with a 40 lap feature event. Jody
Buckley and Zack Curren made up the front
row to get the action started. Buckley took
the early lead until caution flew on lap 3
for JR Kent stopped in turn 1. Kent would
have to go pitside with suspension problems
and would not return. On the restart, Jimmy
Zacharias made his way to the top spot and
went on to another Sunoco Modified win.
Buckley made his strongest showing of 2011,
coming home second. After hard contact with
the backstretch wall in the heat race, Daren
Scherer got the help of fellow competitors
and crews of Jimmy Zacharias and JR Kent to
make repairs and finish 3rd. Zack Curren
took the 4th position and Curtis Cowles 5th.
There will
be no racing at the Chemung Speedrome this
Friday July 15th. Racing action will return
to the ‘Drome on Friday July 22nd at
7:15pm with 5 divisions of racing action. Be
sure to make plans as well for the ROC
Modified Tour 150 coming to the Chemung
Speedrome on Friday August 12th for one of
the best shows of the year. Hope to see you
all again soon at the ‘Drome!
