O-so-good, Bobby Osgood Dominates Chemung’s NASCAR Sunoco

(Chemung, NY) One thing is for certain at WilliamsAutoGroup.com presents Chemung Speedrome, and it’s that nothing is for certain. As in, which drivers will be crowned the track’s 2010 champions on August 27th? Point battles in all 4 divisions are that close. Friday night Bobby Osgood earned a sweep and picked up his 4th win in the NASCAR Sunoco Modified division. Mike Nichols got his inheritance from Terry Potrzebowski when his Mr72 failed post-race tech, giving the Street Stock win to Nichols. Mike Alcaro garnered his 11th INEX Legends win, while Phil Haner scored #4 in the 4 Cylinder division.
The inside lane was the place to be at the start of the 35-lap NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature. Zack Curren had the pole and led the first lap but he brought heat winners Dan Kurzejewski and Bobby Osgood along with him. Kurzejewski got around Curren on the 2nd lap but Osgood was right there looking for an opening. He found one on the 5th lap and took over the lead. The battle for 3rd then heated up between Jimmy Zacharias and JR Kent. Officials assessed a one spot penalty on Zacharias for rough driving that enabled him to pass Kent on the 12th lap.
As the laps clicked off Osgood’s lead increased, leaving Kurzejewski and Zacharias in an apparent battle for 2nd. Contact between Larry Jaynes and Jody Buckley brought out the first caution with 21 laps complete. At that time Zacharias took his penalty and Kent was put back up to 3rd for the restart. The restart was sloppy, as a 3-wide tussle for 2nd involving Kurzejewski, Kent and Zacharias began when they sailed off turn 2. As they approached turn all 3 touched and came to a stop. Kent was done for the night, but tire changes brought Kurzejewski and Zacharias back out.
The restart brought Curren alongside Osgood with TJ Zacharias and Buckley in the 2nd row. Over the final 14 laps Jimmy Zacharias worked his way back toward the front and eventually passed his younger brother to take over 2nd. That’s as close as he’d get to Osgood, who easily claimed his 4th trophy this season. “The car was really tight but it got the job done,” the Horseheads, NY racer said from Horseheads Pick-a-Part Victory Lane. Buckley and Curren finished behind the Zacharias brothers.
It ain’t over ‘til the tech man rules. The outcome of the 25-lap Street Stock feature changed when Terry Potrzebowski’s car failed a compression test and he was disqualified. The win went to the man who raced him clean all night, Mike Nichols. Ken Evans, who had won his heat, led the way for the first 3 laps before Nichols got around and took over. By the 10th lap Nichols and Potrzebowski were engaged in a fierce battle for the lead, often running side-by-side or separated by no more than a car length and pulling away from 3rd place runner Jeff Goodwin. Potrzebowski snuck to the inside coming off turn 2 and completed the pass off turn 4 on the 14th lap.
The only caution came when Brittany Jack spun in turn 4, putting Potrzebowski and Nichols together in row 1 for the restart. They resumed the side-by-side battle and Nichols reclaimed the lead, but not for long. Potrzebowski bobbled a bit, regrouped, and was glued to the inside lane, where he got by Nichols once again on the 19th lap. Behind them, Goodwin was lurking and made several attempts to take over 2nd. When it was over
Potrzebowski celebrated in victory lane but his motor failed a compression test and Mike Nichols from Elmira, NY was declared the winner.
In INEX Legends action AJ Griffin and Mike Alcaro won their respective heat races. The lineup for the 25-lap feature had Joe DeGracia and Andrew Stotler in the front row but Cody Frantz immediately went 3-wide and led the first 2 laps. Richie Vanderpool got to the inside of Frantz in turn 3 and had the lead on the 3rd lap. His time leading was also short, as Mike Alcaro took over when Vanderpool went wide in turn 4. Point leader Justin Petcosky was also on the move, and he dove to the inside of Alcaro and took command on the 11th lap. Just past the halfway point Frantz spun and brought out the 2nd caution. Alcaro lined up beside Petcosky for the restart and he reclaimed the lead when Petcosky came through turn 4 on the high side. The pair treated the fans to some great racing over the final 10 laps, with Petcosky looking high and low for a way around. It wasn’t to be and Newton, NJ’s Alcaro celebrated his 11th win, this time over Petcosky, Vanderpool, Griffin and Stotler.
Phil Haner made easy work of the 4 Cylinder division. The Pine City, NY driver won the heat race and started the 20-lap feature from pole position. Early on it appeared that his nephew, Archie Haner, would seriously contend for the lead but he fell back and had his hands full holding off Gene Purvis and Milton Price. In the latter stages of this one the best battle on the track was for 5th, between Ryan Purvis and Frank Morich. A. Haner finished 2nd, with Price, G. Purvis and R. Purvis all in the top 5. Phil Haner’s sweep, including his 4th feature win, pulled him within 37 points of G. Purvis for the title.
Just two weeks of racing remain on the 2010 schedule and point races are as tight as they’ve ever been. This week it’s a full 4-division program of Modifieds, Street Stocks, INEX Legends and 4 Cylinders.
