Chemung Speedrome 2010 Press Releases

July 30th, 2010
Bobby Osgood Grabs 3rd NASCAR Sunoco Mod Win, Dan Kurzejewski Banks Dash Cash - by Carol Houssock

(Chemung, NY) Bobby Osgood will always remember the month of July 2010. That’s when he won 3 of the 4 NASCAR Sunoco Modified features at WilliamAutoGroup.com presents Chemung Speedrome. And in the 4th of those races he finished in the runner-up spot. Win #3 came Friday night. Others in the Horseheads Pick-A-Part Victory Lane included Terry Potrzebowski (Street Stocks), Justin Petcosky (INEX Legends), and Gene Purvis (4 Cylinders). Dan Kurzejewski and Joe Bennett won the Dash-for-Cash events for the Modifieds and Street Stocks.

From 20 to 10 to 1 - that’s the point differential between Jimmy Zacharias and JR Kent in the NASCAR Sunoco Modified division in the last 3 weeks. Kent’s heat win, combined with finishing one spot ahead of Zacharias has the pair heading into the home stretch separated by just 1 point. Al Chapman won the other heat race and had the pole for the 40-lap feature. This was started horribly, when Chapman bobbled coming off turn 4. Some right behind him checked up while those further back stacked up and a nasty wreck ensued. Bryan Sherwood got the worst of the deal, running up and over Ronnie Smith, clearing Rusty Smith, and them almost scaling the pit road wall. With the red flag waving, everyone breathed a little easier as Sherwood, Rusty Smith and Zack Curren climbed from their battered cars. When the yellow came back out Ronnie Smith headed to the pits for repairs and was able to continue. On the 2nd attempt to start the race Dan Kurzejewski got the lead and held it until his car broke and brought out the caution. Chapman again faced Kent for the restart but it was Bobby Osgood, who restarted 3rd, who got the better of both. Kent then followed Osgood and took over 2nd, dropping Chapman back to 3rd. Zacharias and Ronnie Smith were also hanging in the lead group, and both made late race passes on Chapman. When it was over Osgood had capped off a very successful month of July with his 3rd feature win. Kent was 2nd, followed to the line by Zacharias, Smith and Chapman.

The Dash-for-Cash for non-feature winners resulted in a near dead-heat finish between Dan Kurzejewski and Ronnie Smith. After officials reviewed the D&J Fotos videotape, the win went to Kurzejewski by the narrowest of margins.

The 25-lap Street Stock feature had drama from the get-go when the two heat winners exited early with identical problems. Point leader Mike Nichols broke on the opening lap, and two laps later it was Jeff Goodwin who retired, both with broken rears on their cars. And, in both instances, the drivers kept the race under green and reached pit road without bringing out the caution flag. Brittany Jack, who had started on the pole, led the way and held off Terry Potrzebowski and Chris Daugherty through the halfway point. What Jack didn’t want to see, after leading 17 laps, was a caution. But that’s what happened. On the restart Potrzebowski put his veteran skills to work and got the better of her off turn 2. Derrick Tarbox had his car tuned in perfectly and made a late race pass on Daugherty to take over 2nd. When it was over Potrzebowski had his 3rd win of the year and created a close point chase with Nichols for this year’s title. Tarbox finished the race 2nd, followed by Daugherty, Joe Bennett and Terry Ostrander.

The Street Stock Dash-for-Cash for non-feature winners had an exciting outcome when the battle for 3rd became the battle for the win. Terry Ostrander and Brittany Jack got together and spun, putting Joe Bennett and Joe Lane in a position to take the money. Bennett won this battle and left with the bragging rights.

AJ Griffin capitalized on his pole position starting spot in the 25-lap INEX Legends feature and he led early. Richie Vanderpool, Justin Petcosky and Mike Alcaro, who started 8th, 9th, and 10th, were working the traffic and moving to the front together. Vanderpool took over the top spot on the 8th lap, followed closely by Alcaro and Petcosky. The pivotal moment in this one occurred just short of the halfway point. As the trio entered turn 1 on the 11th lap, Alcaro got into Vanderpool and brought out the caution. Both restarted at the rear, and Petcosky inherited the lead. When it was over Petcosky had his 2nd win of the year and padded his point lead. Matt Priscott edged Cody Frantz for 2nd, with Art Priscott and Vanderpool completing the top 5. Petcosky and Vanderpool won the 2 heat races.

Gene Purvis swept the action in the 4 Cylinder division and kept his vision of another track title within reach. Purvis got the better of pole-sitter Frank Morich on the opening lap of their 15-lap feature but Morich took over on the 2nd lap. The pair staged a lively battle for the lead, with Purvis looking to the inside then the outside for an opening. On the 11th lap he went back to the outside and made his race-winning pass. Morich finished 2nd, followed by Milton Price, Archie Haner and Phil Haner.

Race teams and fans are reminded that the start time for the remaining four races will be 7:15 PM. This week Carquest Auto Parts presents a full 4-division program of Modifieds, Street Stocks, INEX Legends and 4 Cylinders.
