Chemung Speedrome 2010 Press Releases

July 10th, 2010
Nichols, Alcaro and Price Win at Chemung, NASCAR Sunoco Mods Rained Out - by Carol Houssock

(Chemung, NY) One by one tracks to the north and west of Chemung pulled the plug when a cold front and rain ended a 6-day heat wave. Officials at WilliamsAutoGroup.com presents Chemung Speedrome opted to give it their best shot, and almost got it all in on Mid-Season Championship Night. When it was over Mike Nichols had his 6th Street Stock win, Mike Alcaro had his 8th in the INEX Legends, and Milton Price scored his 2nd win in the 4 Cylinder division. Rain did move in, forcing the postponement of the 35-lap SUNOCO Modified feature. That one will be run on Friday, July 23rd before qualifying for the regular event that night.

Dan Kurzejewski and Bobby Osgood won the two heats for the NASCAR Sunoco Modifieds. Ironically, when the field lined up for the scheduled 35-lap feature, the pair got together on the backstretch and put the race under caution before a lap was scored. Both kept going then headed to the pits, Osgood with extensive damage. Just then Mother Nature let loose and rain moved in. With a massive green blob on the radar map and black skies all around, officials called the race, which will now be run in its entirety on July 23rd. The rain turned out to be a huge break for Osgood.

Street Stock point leader Mike Nichols now has a 6-pack of feature wins. On Friday night he was one of 4 different race leaders, but he led when it mattered most. Terry Ostrander got the better of pole-sitter Joe Bennett on the first lap, but after a side-by-side run Bennett took over for 2 laps. Behind them Nichols took over 3rd when Jeff Goodwin got loose and opened up the inside lane. The first of 2 cautions came out when Ken Evans got into Ostrander. Brittany Jack, restarting 2nd, led lap 4 but Nichols got around her and Bennett to assume the top spot on the 5th lap. The 2nd caution involved Jack and Goodwin, who restarted at the rear. Nichols drove away but it was Terry Potrzebowski who got within striking distance. At the halfway point he trailed by 4 cars lengths but that widened over the final 10 laps. Nichols took the checkered flag, followed by Potrzebowski, heat winner Chris Daugherty, Goodwin and Jack. Brandon Ameigh won the other heat race but problems continue on the #10 and he failed to start the feature.

Mike Alcaro knows his way around the Speedrome. Friday night he had to go from 10th to 1st, and he did so in just 8 laps. This one took 2 attempts to get going when Brandon Michael and Andrew Stotler got together on the opening lap. Van Michael led the way early with Richie Vanderpool in pursuit. Justin Petcosky, running 3rd, tapped Vanderpool who spun and collected AJ Griffin. Petcosky pitted with a flat right front but made it back out just as the green flag flew. Alcaro, who moved up to 2nd for the restart, won the drag race to turn 1 and the race was his. Two other cautions slowed the action, but over the final few laps Matt Priscott and Petcosky were closing in on Vanderpool. When it was over Alcaro had his 8th win. Vanderpool finished 2nd, followed by Truesdail, Priscott and Petcosky.

Milton Price backed up his earlier win this year with his 2nd in the 4 Cylinder division. Starting from the pole, he led the way from the get-go. The battle in this 15-lap race, as Price pulled away, was for 2nd. Phil Haner, Archie Haner and Gene Purvis ran together until Archie’s car slowed and he retired on the 7th lap. From then on the question was whether Purvis could reel in P. Haner, and he did to take 2nd.

This weekend Chemung switches to Sunday afternoon racing and welcomes the Sunoco Race of Champions Modified Tour for a 150-lap championship series event. All of the track’s regular divisions join them on the full race card.

Pits open at 10 AM, with the grandstand gate opening at 12 noon. Practice gets underway at 1 PM and the first heat hits the track at 2:15 PM. Admission is $20 for adults and seniors, $9 for kids ages 5-16, and always free for kids under age 5. Fans are reminded to bring their ticket stubs from July 9th for a $2 discount.
