Kent Wins Chemung Mods; Hanbury Injured in
Wreck
(Chemung, NY) Everyone in attendance for Friday night’s races at WilliamsAutoGroup.com presents Chemung Speedrome knows they were memorable. But with a full moon overhead the memories were not all good ones. Among the good, for their teams and fans, were return trips to the Horseheads Pick-A-Part victory lane by Jr Kent (NASCAR Sunoco Modifieds), Terry Potrzebowski (Street Stocks), and Archie Haner (4 Cylinders). More good memories came for Paul Burns, Jr (4 Cylinders) and Bayley Currey (INEX Legends), who celebrated career-first wins at the Speedrome. Among the bad memories were several wrecks, the most serious of which sent Modified point leader, Tony Hanbury, to the hospital with a back injury.
Jr Kent, who started 6th, took over the top spot in the 30-lap NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature following a pair of wrecks that eliminated pole-sitter Zach Truesdail, then Tony Hanbury and Jimmy Zacharias. For Kent, this was win #2 this year and he stays within striking distance of another track championship. Bobby Osgood finished 2nd, ahead of Rusty Smith, Dan Kurzejewski and Zack Curren. Zacharias and Osgood won their heat races.
Medical personnel responding to Hanbury’s battered car determined the roof had to be cut to get him out without further injury. When done Hanbury walked to the ambulance and was transported to a nearby hospital. He was admitted and released on Saturday with a fracture to his back, according to his family.
Terry Potrzebowski made it a sweep in the Street Stock division, picking up his heat race and the 25-lap feature. As it had two weeks ago, the race featured five lead changes among three drivers. Potrzebowski led three times, but was not passed over the final 10 laps. Still 2nd in points, he made his 2nd 2010 trip to victory lane. Once again Potrzebowski held off Mike Nichols, Chris Daugherty and Jeff Goodwin, with Brittany Jack picking up another top-5 finish. Ken Evans won his first-ever heat race.
There was a fresh new face in victory lane following the 25-lap INEX Legends feature. Bayley Currey, a 13 year old from Texas, smoked the field and shocked the crowd when he emerged from his car. Cody Frantz led the first 4 laps before losing the top spot to Currey. Once in front he checked out and put another notch in his Lone Star belt. Currey entered the race 2nd in the national standings. Mike Alcaro, who had won 7 of the 8 races he’d run, could get no closer than 2nd, with Justin Petcosky, Frantz and Matt Priscott all in the top 5. Currey and Alcaro won their respective heats.
The track’s 4 Cylinder division ran twin-15 lap features. The first race was both good and bad for the Purvis brothers. Gene, current point leader, started 6th but ended up first for his 3rd win of the year. Earlier in the race his brother Ryan’s car sustained heavy damage in a wreck and he was done for the night. Archie Haner, Phil Haner, Joe Lane and Paul Burns, Jr. finished behind G. Purvis.
In the 2nd 15-lap race it appeared as though Milton Price would pick up his 2nd win of the year but it went to another first-time winner. Price led all but 1 lap, and his trouble set up a great finish for a newcomer to the division. Paul Burns, Jr. held off both Archie and Phil Haner to score a career-first feature win at Chemung. Frank Morich finished the race 4th, followed by Gene Purvis.
This weekend the Speedrome family remembers the late Brian Osgood, first of three generations to race at the track. The NASCAR Sunoco Modifieds will run for well over $5,200 in bonus money along with the regular purse. The Street Stocks, 4 Cylinders and INEX Legends complete the 4 division program. Pits open at 4 PM, with practice and grandstand gates opening at 5:30 PM. The first heat hits the track at 7:30 PM. Admission is $10 for adults, $6 for seniors and kids ages 5-16, and always free for kids under age 5. Fans are reminded to bring their ticket stubs from June 25th for a $2 discount.
