Chemung Ready To Roll Out
Full Season With May 3rd Opener
By Carol Houssock
It’s getting
closer, the season opener at Chemung Speedrome!
Race teams are
gearing up for what promises to be a competitive,
action-packed season at the fast 3/8-mile paved
oval. It’s always been short track racing at its
best, but Nascar racing at the Speedrome just got a
whole lot better with some schedule changes.
The first cars will
hit the track this Saturday (April 26th) for
practice beginning at 1 PM. Grandstand admission is
free. Rain date is Sunday, April 27th at the same
time.
The following
Saturday, May 3rd, the track opens up the ’08
season with its usual 6:30 PM start - but with a new
addition. The new North East Mod Lites join the
track’s regular divisions (Nascar Weekly Modified
SST, Super Stock, 4 Cylinder, Speedrome Junior, INEX
Legend and Bandolero) this year. The Mod Lite is a
more affordable entry into open wheel racing
featuring a sealed crate motor. Several drivers,
including Jody Buckley (’07 4 Cylinder champ) and
John Lane have been busy preparing their cars for
the all-important debut.
Throughout the
summer and fall race fans will also enjoy watching
some visitors, including the American TQ Midget
Series, 4C Super Modifieds, the USAC Ford Focus
Midget Car Series, and the ROC DART Asphalt Modified
Tour. Not since 2001 has the track hosted the NASCAR
Whelen Modified Tour, but the big boys will roll
into Chemung on October 4th to close out the ’08
season.
Always a
crowd-pleaser, the ROC race this year will have new
meaning, and double the distance! With the closing
of Wall Township Speedway, ROC Director Andrew
Harpell redesigned the tour around one region but he
threw in the added excitement of a 5-race
championship trail leading up to the overall title.
Chemung Speedrome
will kick off that 5-race run to the title in a race
that has doubled from 75 to 150 grueling laps. This
is the 2nd year in a row that Chemung has been the
first in an ROC revision. Last year the revised ROC
body style debuted at Chemung, and this year it’s
extra money, extra laps, and extra excitement for
the fans and competitors alike on Sunday August
17th.
Race fans should
mark their calendars for Saturday nights at the
Speedrome, with 3 exceptions: two Sunday shows (June
29 and August 17) and one Friday night event (July
11) to accommodate Spencer Speedway, Chemung’s
sister track to the north.
The 2008 schedule,
directions, forms and more information are available
on the track’s website: www.chemungspeedrome.net.
It’s Nascar Whelen All-American racing. It’s
Fast. And it’s a fun ride for the family.
Chemung Speedrome
– short track racing at its best!
