Rain Shortens Chemung Program, 75-lap Modified Race First Up This Weekend - by Carol Houssock

(Chemung, NY) Mother Nature’s fashionably late arrival at Chemung on Sunday was still early enough to wash out 3 feature events and mess up a lot of plans. Qualifying to set the fields was held for the NASCAR Weekly Modifieds, Super Stocks and 4 Cylinders, but the INEX Legends, Speedrome Juniors and the touring ATQMRA series were the only ones to run their features. This Saturday race fans will see that 75-lap Modified race, with the other 2 races to be held in the coming weeks.

Resembling a case of ‘grand theft auto’, several outsiders came to Chemung, put some manners on the regulars, and stole the show. George Cushman, Richie Vanderpool and Brad Hancock got things going when they won their respective heat races. Handicapping put Jeff Doebler and Brandon Michael on the front row for the start of their 20-lap feature. They ran side-by-side on the opening lap but Michael lost the lead when Jason Palmer, who had started 8th, worked his way to the top spot.

Matt Evans brought out the first caution 8 laps into the feature when he spun in turn 4. Palmer and Mike Alcaro, who had won earlier this year at Chemung, restarted from the front row. Alcaro tried, but failed, to get around the leader. Over the next half dozen laps Hancock moved up from

Ray Bliss Captures Chemung’s Dirt-on-Asphalt Challenge
by Carol Houssock

(Chemung, NY) Chemung Speedrome had hosted a couple races over the years for dirt drivers who wanted to try their luck on the asphalt. This year’s schedule included a full day for several divisions, and the show proved to be a crowd-pleaser. Ray Bliss won the Sportsman Modified feature in dominating fashion. Also picking up wins under perfect weather conditions were Ajay Potrzebowski (Street Stocks), James Freeman (FWD 4 Cylinders), James Kreidler (RWD 4 Cylinders), and Dayton Cote (Juniors). Race fans were also winners on Sunday, as the entire program was well received.

Loren Lincoln and Casey Pavlick lined up in the front row for the start of the 25-lap Sportsman Modified feature. Lincoln took off, leaving Pavlick in a good battle with Ray Bliss for 2nd. Bliss found what he wanted on the 4th lap and he took over. Chris Silvers, who had started 4th, was also in the mix pressuring Pavlick for 3rd. That battle ended on the 8th lap when Pavlick’s car broke and he retired. When racing resumed Bliss took off and worked on putting a cushion between him and the duo battling for 2nd. Lincoln had the spot but Silvers was right there with him. As the laps clicked off, Lincoln gradually pulled away from Silvers but never had enough to reel in the leader. Bliss took the checkered flag, his first-ever on an asphalt surface. Lincoln had to settle for 2nd, with Silvers, Rick Willsey and Chris Clemens all leaving with top-5 finishes. “This was fun,” Bliss said from victory lane. “Ray Smith usually runs this car but they asked me to give it a try today and here we are.” .

Josh Nobriga and Nick Robinson, a former Junior competitor at Chemung, brought the Street Stock field to the green for their 25-lap feature and Nobriga prevailed. Robinson had Nathan Peckham dogging him for 2nd, a spot he eventually took. Caution came out when Kevin Morrison spun with 8 laps complete. On the restart Nobriga took off, leaving a 3-wide

JR Kent Grabs 2nd NASCAR Weekly Modified Win at Chemung; Terry Potrzebowski Best in Super Stock Show
by Carol Houssock

(Chemung, NY) The skies, though threatening at times, remained clear above Chemung Speedrome Saturday night. JR Kent picked up his 2nd win this year in the NASCAR Weekly Modified division. Joining him in victory lane were Terry Potrzebowski (Super Stocks), Art Priscott (INEX Legends), Archie Haner (4 Cylinders), Zach Curren (North East Mod Lites) and Fred Peters (Speedrome Juniors).

In NASCAR Weekly Modified action, Zach Truesdail and Daren Scherer won the 2 heat races then made up the front row for the 40-lap feature. JR Kent, who started 3rd, made his way to the front with Tony Hanbury right behind him. Larry Jaynes spun on the 15th lap, putting Hanbury alongside Kent. Truesdail and Tim Gullo were right behind them for the restart. Kent won the drag race to turn 1 but Hanbury won he respect of many when he ran the bulk of this race on the outside lane trying to power his way around the leader. He’d get another restart opportunity following a yellow when debris (Gullo’s muffler) littered the front stretch. Again Hanbury tried, and again Kent prevailed on the restart. The 3rd, and final, caution flag came out when Lee Sharpsteen got into Scherer and turned him around. That set up a 5-lap dash to the checkered flag. Kent was glued to the low side of the track and Hanbury came close but never passed him. The win, Kent’s 2nd this year, put to end a great race between two very talented drivers. “I’m not to where Tony is but it was all about who got to the front first,” Kent said. Hanbury was the first to congratulate him for a win he said Kent deserved. Hanbury settled for 2nd in this one, with Truesdail, Gullo and Charlie Sharpsteen rounding out the top five.

The 25-lap Super Stock feature nearly had half a dozen different winners, but the victory lane interview was with Terry Potrzebowski. Tim Gullo led early but there was plenty of 3-wide racing that resulted in a nice move for the top spot by heat winner Jeff Goodwin. Lap 11 was pivotal. Brittany
